Charities and nonprofits play huge roles in our communities. They improve our lives and fill gaps in the services we rely on. When we strengthen them, we strengthen the very fabric of our lives. Yet sometimes folks don’t realize they are there, or what they do, until they need them.

JustSayinCaledon.com is on a mission to raise awareness for the charities and nonprofits that are pivotal to the Caledon community.

We start this series with:

Caledon Meals on Wheels

At Caledon Meals on Wheels (CMOW) we spoke with Executive Director Kim Rodrigues.

In a nutshell what does CMOW do?

Since its inception in 1984, CMOW has been dedicated to enhancing the well-being of our community members. Annually, we extend our nutrition, health promotion, and social programs to nearly 800 individuals residing in the Caledon, Orangeville and surrounding areas. While the majority of our beneficiaries are seniors, we extend our support to those with physical disabilities, mental health challenges, and individuals recuperating from illness or surgery.

At CMOW, our mission is fuelled by a dedicated team comprising a Board of Directors, 12 staff members, and over 100 volunteers. Together, we strive to empower residents to maintain their independence in the comfort of their homes for as long as possible.

Spanning across Caledon, Orangeville, and neighbouring areas, CMOW offers a comprehensive range of programs and services. Our four core initiatives include:

·       Hot and Frozen Meal Delivery with Safety Checks

·       Seniors Wellness Groups: encompassing 14 weekly programs and two semi-annual community seniors’ luncheons, each hosting approximately 80-100 participants

·       Friendly Visiting: providing companionship either in-home or via phone calls

·       Project Lifesaver Caledon and Orangeville: furnishing locating equipment and supplies for individuals prone to wandering

Please note that the availability of certain programs may vary based on the service areas covered by other community service providers.

Are there any particular programs you want to emphasize?

Caledon Meals on Wheels is more than just meals! Our Senior Wellness Programs offered throughout Caledon is helping older seniors remain active and engaged.

Seniors stretchingOur Wellness Programs help combat key concerns facing older adults in our community, including physical health, social isolation, and access to information and support for health prevention and promotion. The objectives of our project include:

1. Provide holistic wellness support: By offering a variety of wellness initiatives such as physical activities, social engagements, educational workshops, and an age-friendly inclusive events, we aim to address the diverse needs of older adults particularly those who are isolated and/or living rurally.

2. Combat social isolation: Through regular social gatherings and activities, our team aims to create inclusive spaces where seniors can connect with others, build relationships, and combat feelings of loneliness and isolation.

3. Increase access to information and support: By hosting seminars and workshops on topics such as cyber awareness, lectures and continuing education classes, cultural days, self-care and more we seek to empower seniors with essential knowledge and help them stay mentally active and engaged with the world around them.

Our Senior Wellness Programs offer 14 weekly programs – there is something for everyone! Programs are free with the exception of a small fee for our monthly luncheons.

What sort of challenges are the nonprofit sector and organizations like CMOW currently facing?

Group of volunteersThe nonprofit sector, including organizations like CMOW, faces challenges such as limited funding or a reduction in funding coupled with increasing demand for services. Caledon Meals on Wheels depends heavily on volunteers, and post COVID, recruiting and retaining volunteers has been challenging. Navigating these challenges requires innovative solutions and strong community support.

What would you like the public to know about how they can help?

There are several ways the public can support CMOW’s mission. Donations are always appreciated and help us continue our vital work. Volunteering your time to help deliver meals or assist with our programs is another impactful way to get involved. Additionally, participating in fundraising campaigns like Smile Cookies can make a significant difference in supporting our initiatives.
