The Caledon Community Road Safety Advocacy (CCRSA) group is reminding residents that they continue to fight for improved road safety and the removal of as many illegal truck yards from Caledon and surrounding municipalities as possible.
The group says their focus remains on:
· short term improvements – like more police enforcement, requests for stop signs, stop lights, traffic calming, flashing speed signs in key areas; working with the OPP on how to best organize the community to safely take action on their own (with things like Neighbourhood Watch) to empower residents
· medium term improvements – like ASE cameras, red light cameras, traffic cameras, interactive map of illegal land use properties, working with municipalities to halt or pause truck-heavy developments where possible
· long term improvements – such as more MTO enforcement; pushing for change at the Provincial level to empower municipalities to take more action against illegal land use and to have license issuing brought back to the Ministry of Transportation & taken away from a 3rd party; improved truck driver training overseen by the Province and putting an apprenticeship program in place before truck drivers can drive alone
What would CCRSA like Caledon residents to be more aware of?
Be aware of your own driving habits – leave enough time for you to safely get where you are going; leave more space between you and the drivers around you. Road safety starts with you, your attitude and how you drive.
Be aware of road safety issues in your community:
o Call OPP 1-888-310-1122 or file an online report if you see unsafe driving that isn’t an emergency. If it is an emergency, call 911
o If you can afford it, invest in a dash camera – you can provide the evidence of bad driving to OPP and protect yourself at the same time
o If you see something that can be improved speak up! Call or email your local Councillor or Town staff at 905-584-2272 to speak about what you think needs to be changed. If all you do is complain about things on social media – that won’t affect change as quickly as if you get involved and interact with other community members and your local government. You can reach out to us, and we can guide you through what you can do.
Be aware of illegal land use close to where you live and on your route to and from work. If you see dirt being moved on an agricultural or vacant property, fill being added, a driveway being widened, a fence being added – the land might be starting to be used as an illegal truck yard. You can call 311 or email info@caledon.ca and ask the By-law dept what the current zoning is and whether they have the approvals in place for these activities. And if they don’t, by-law can start taking action.
