Hello My Good friend and neighbour,

Out in the great Canadian wilderness sits PEKWACHNAMAYKOSKWASKWAYPINWANIK, a freshwater lake in northeastern Manitoba best known for its 31-letter Cree name. This holds the longest official place name in Canada.

Behind all those letters is a rich cultural story, a symbol of the enduring presence of Indigenous languages across the landscape and an honouring of First Nations histories.

Beyond being a tongue twister worthy of its own championship, a name so impossibly long and slightly confusing that by the time you’ve finished saying it the summer sun is ready to set. It’s the only destination where reaching the end of the name feels like arriving.

It’s also proof that if you can pronounce the name of this lake without fainting, you can probably accomplish anything you set your mind to – one mouthful challenge and one tongue-tying adventure at a time.

Speak truth, embrace adventure, earn your Canadian history badge.

Keep shining! ‘Ahkameyimohk’ (Cree)
