As a school, Caledon Central Public School in Caledon Village has come to understand the value of community connections and teaching students the importance of supporting local businesses. As students learn each day about financial literacy, communities, and the value of relationships in all grade levels, providing an opportunity throughout the month of February to create opportunities for students and families to invest in our local community has become an annual event.
For the second year in a row, Caledon Central is hosting their Community Connections Month. This unique event allows the school to partner with local businesses around Caledon Village to encourage school families and community members to access services and in turn support the school.
This year 7 local businesses are participating; Dolce Family Restaurant, Gather Café, Higher Ground Café, Goodlot Farm Brewing Co, Heatherlea Farms Shoppe, Harmony Nails and the local village McDonalds. Throughout the month of February, school families and community members visit these local establishments and use a school voucher to have 10% of all purchases/services be donated back to the school at the end of the month.
“We love our community, and we love local businesses, finding ways to tie those back into who we are as a school can only make us better” says Lesley Kennedy, Caledon Central Principal. Last year they received over $500.00 back from local businesses to support outdoor education equipment, unique trip opportunities and so much more at the school. This year the funds will go towards, outdoor seating, shading spaces and co-operative learning materials.
With the school focus on “creating a heart of service and excellence together”, establishing these community connections develops ongoing relationships where stacking hands becomes a part of who we are.
