Bolton Regional Councillor Good to Know

West Nile Virus Alert

West Nile Virus (WNV) is a potentially serious illness. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected by biting an infected bird.

In Peel an adult mosquito surveillance program started on June 10. Adult mosquitoes are collected weekly from mosquito traps at 31 fixed locations throughout the region of Peel until late September.

To date, over 200 mosquito batches have been tested. This week 3 batches tested positive, one of which was in Caledon at Deer Valley Drive and King Street West in Bolton.

Since people may be exposed to a positive mosquito anywhere in the Region at this time of year it is better for people to take precautions to avoid being bitten at all times.

To this end the Region of Peel has published information on prevention and protection at http://www.peelregion.ca/health/vbd/prev-prot.htm

To date there are no human cases of West Nile Virus reported in Peel this season.
