Seniors Seeking Solutions: How about Golden Girls Living?

Woman
Written by Patti Foley

According to the 2016 Census there are now more people age 65 and older living in Canada than there are under age 14. It was a long-expected milestone with Statistics Canada attributing the numbers, in part, to the post-war baby boom. Over the next 15 years the remainder of the baby boomers will become seniors and, here in Canada, that proportion of the population is expected to swell to well over 20%.

So now, more than ever, options for seniors accommodations are vital. In Caledon options have historically been low. The last term of Council saw a number of projects either initiated or furthered but, proper construction and process take time, and some of these projects are just nearing their final stages today.

Just Sayin’ Caledon launched Seniors Seeking Solutions, series of articles that seek to provide information on options and resources available.

About Golden Girls Living

“Golden Girls Living” is another answer to the growing need for seniors’ housing.

A Golden Girls home is a home shared by mature adults. Sometimes it’s two women sharing an apartment; sometimes it’s four women and men sharing a house. Each house develops its own culture and style, and each member makes the house feel like home. Sharing a living space is economical, environmentally friendly, and reduces the sense of alienation and isolation.

Is Golden Girls Living the Right Option for You?

The Homeowner:
You love your home and your neighbourhood, and you don’t want to move. You’re living alone now, and the house is larger than you really need and hard to manage. You miss having someone around to share a cup of coffee or go for a walk, someone to share happy moments with or to talk to in a crisis. You are NOT ready to move in with your kids or move to a retirement community!

The Housemate:
You’re a wonderful someone, just like the homeowner, but who doesn’t own a house or condo. You’re looking for a nice, stable place to live at an affordable price. Perhaps you’ve moved to a new area and want to integrate into the community. You would love to find a family-like setting where you can live with other like-minded people.

  • ‘Morning Patti … thanks for your article on Golden Girls. I am curious about the full day workshop offered. Who’s organizing it? The cost seems rather steep, don’t you think?

    • Hi Gail. I believe it is being run by Dorothy Mazeau. Would you like me to message you her contact info?
