Public Process at Risk in Caledon?

Written by Patti Foley

The following is excerpted from a letter that arrived this evening from Caledon Mayor Allan Thompson, regarding the focus of Tuesday night’s Council meeting. Take note folks……and be in the audience if you can…..

I’m writing this message to bring an important issue regarding development in Caledon to your immediate attention.

Town of Caledon Council tomorrow will hear delegations for and opposed to include the Bolton Residential Expansion boundaries as part of a Provincial Facilitation.

For those who have not been following this issue you may ask what does this mean and why is this important now?

I feel that Provincial Facilitation at this early stage would take the public and Council out of the process and allow for a single developer with interests that may be contrary to the majority in the Bolton community, to have a say in local planning matters. I believe this request is premature as we have not had the opportunity to engage in public consultations on future residential development for this area.

Once Town Council makes a decision this Tuesday we expect that the matter will be brought forward at Regional Council on Thursday May 28th. Regional Councillors are being heavily lobbied by the developer who is driving this request. In all of my years on Regional Council I have never witnessed a greater amount of interest in our local planning from Councillors not representing Caledon.

I encourage the public to stay informed, if you are able, plan to attend the Town Council meeting tomorrow night, Tuesday May 26th 7:00pm (at Town Hall in Caledon East) and the Regional Council meeting, Thursday May 28th 9:30am (at Region of Peel Council Chambers in Brampton).

  • Thanks for the heads up on the Patti. This just makes my blood boil. The minute the door was opened to this developer things in terms for Caledon became an utter s#*t show. With the history that Caledon has experienced with respect to this developer, we all know that they will use everything in their power, they will pull out every weapon in their arsenal, not respecting any limits, protocols or existing planning direction at either the town or the region. I hope people will remember who helped open the door to this behemoth of a developer and how much this will truly cost Caledon. This developer is now focusing on getting his support from regional councillors in other municipalities who have no interest in protecting Caledon from massive development.

    • You’ve got it Christine, right on point. Please share through social media today. I’m hoping we can fill Chambers to show Caledon is watching and listening!

    • Hello John. If you have a closer read you will see that this post is clearly identified in the opening paragraph as an excerpt from a letter sent to me by Allan Thompson. He said “In all my years on Council” – quite appropriate as he has been there several terms.
