Held each September at the Alton Mill, the Headwaters Arts’ fall festival is the non-profit arts organization’s only “juried” art event of the year and it kicks off the upcoming art season.

But this year’s recent Soiree event held special significance as this is its 30th anniversary.

“Since this year’s event marked our 30th Anniversary, we had individuals who have been instrumental in the development of the Headwaters Arts organization as guest speakers,” says events committee chair Nancy Kruger.

One of those speakers was Signe Ball, the founder and former publisher of In the Hills magazine.

Third place winner was Nancy Lennon for “Blue Silhouette Reeds”.

A record number of 200 pieces were submitted to the show, with 73 works of arts from 52 artists accepted and on display the night of the Soiree, says Nancy.

Those pieces were evaluated by a two-member jury comprised of Julia Veenstra, a Hamilton-based artist and entrepreneur whose work can be found in collections across the globe, and Liza Zhurkovsakaya, a Toronto-based curator, art advisor, and founder of Kefi Art Gallery.

Caledon painter and photographer Iris Ranieri’s abstract painting Forest River (header photo above) was judged Best in Show. Two other award winners are also recognized. They included 2nd place winner Patricia MacDonald for “What the World Needs Now is Love” and third place winner Nancy Lennon for “Blue Silhouette Reeds”.

Other award recipients included Courtney Chard who received the Molesworth Award for 3-dimensional work for Ringmaster, a welded steel creation. The Curator’s Award was given to Haley Marfleet for “A Box from Crumbl”, oil on canvas painting. There were also five Honourable Mentions.

The show runs until Oct. 4 and patrons can participate in the People’s Choice Awards by filling out a ballot until the date.

Approximately 165 guests attended the Soiree, says Nancy.
