Environment Stories of Caledon

New Caledon Business Bringing Environmental Solutions Right To Your Door

Written by Kay MacDuffee

Death by plastic!

Sound outrageous? Not if you happen to be a sea mammal or bird or reptile.

For homo sapiens it refers more to the death of the planet, in other words, our home.  It is a creeping malignance that we cannot seem to resist feeding. And don’t kid yourself that recycling is the panacea. Only about 9% gets recycled. (Recycling Council of Ontario)

Plastic does not easily break down in a landfill, and when it slowly does, it leaches toxic chemicals into our ecosystems and waterways. Norman Mailer called it ‘the social equivalent of cancer’.

Thank your lucky stars there are those among us who search for solutions rather than merely wring their hands and complain. Let me introduce one of them:

Caledon East’s Carolyn Vallejo heard the call to action.  “If I can make a small income that’s good, but I have to DO something,” she told me.

She closed her tutoring practice, knowing that a new business venture would require all of her resources, and engaged her family in a shiny new enterprise – The TURTLE GREEN REFILLERY!

It’s a door-to-door service, kind of like the milkman used to provide, where you leave out your own bottles or jars and Turtle Green comes by and refills them.  No more plastic bottle disposal worries.

Use your own spray bottles or jars if you like, or Carolyn will provide mason jars. To date she offers half a dozen products and is planning to expand that.  For now it’s: dish soap, laundry detergent, hand soap, body lotion, surface cleaners, band-aid type bandages made of organic bamboo, and a tooth cleaning product called Nelson Naturals (from BC), available in a little jar of paste or a chewable foamy tablet.   Check them out at www.turtlegreenrefillery.ca.

It’s a beautiful website designed by her web designer son, Nicolas.  The younger son, Martin, designed the logo.  Like I said, it’s already a family business.

I asked about Carolyn’s inspiration.  “What mapped out the plan after you heard the call to do something?”  She was on a trip home from Collingwood when she heard a radio commercial for the Creemore Refillery.  A light went on.  She stopped at the Creemore Refillery and stepped inside,

“Wow!” she remembers saying.  “I should do this!”

Now for the majority of us, that would be a passing thought, but this woman is passionate about changing the status quo and she took it to the limit.  She sourced the suppliers with her highest standards in mind.  She started small with a plan to grow the product line slowly.

Turtle Green’s suppliers are The Unscented Company (a certified B corporation) and Pure.

“I like them,” Carolyn explains, “because they offer in bulk to re-sell and they have a real conscience”.  Everything is unscented with the option to add your own scent using your choice of essential oil.

“What is the big challenge now?” I ask.

“Getting the word out in the middle of a pandemic,” is the quick answer.

So that, my friends, is what we are doing here and now.

From an environmental, or an economical, or just a ‘feel good’ perspective I believe that this is our best bet for cleaning supplies.  Carolyn delivers to your door, fills your bottles and bills you.  She makes it easy to be green.  She is a living example of “being the change you wish to see”.

Turtle Green Refillery only operates through local delivery which occurs occur on Mondays and Tuesdays. Orders must be received by Sunday evening at 6pm to ensure delivery on Monday or Tuesday. They contact customers by phone before delivering your products.

This is International Plastic Free July month www.plasticfreejuly.org. No better time to break free from plastic. No better way than with Turtle Green Refillery.

Humans could disappear from Earth tomorrow, but many of the plastics we’ve made will last for centuries.

An important note from Turtle Green Refillery:

COVID protocols? We’ve got it covered! We have your safety at the forefront in everything we do. We bring our products and refilling service to your door but do not enter your home. We observe physical distancing practices and wear masks. All containers are wiped down with a disinfecting solution prior to leaving them with you. Payment is made through our website or through a touchless tap process for in-person transactions.
