Caledon Election

Music Maestro Please

Last Thursday night my husband and I were treated to one of the fabulous rites of spring (and parenthood) at the annual Humberview Secondary School Spring Concert. Under the skilled leadership of John and Wendy Chalmers and Megan Collings music students once again rose to the occasion, entertaining with a level of talent that is inarguably surprising for their youthful age. Many of these students I have watched from their first year at Allan Drive Middle School where the late (and unforgettable) Principal Jan Scott and dedicated music teachers like Greg and Mariska Dickison inspired them to find their inner joy and give it wings.

On Thursday night, one after the other, groups like Jazzork, Mkosa, Intermediate Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Concert Choir, Junior Jazz and Senior Concert Band took to stage and drew applause from our hands and parental pride from our hearts. It made me wonder about the future paths of our youth. For those whose gifts have been so skilfully identified, encouraged, practised and honed…..what’s next? Do we offer enough, as a community, to help them carry on and move their talents forward? Whether you’re a parent, teacher, or student……..I’d like to hear your thoughts……
