A Message from the Region of Peel: Time is running out for youth to get fully vaccinated before school is back in session
The window of opportunity is closing. It is time to act now and get youth vaccinated so they can begin the school year as safely and normally as possible.
Why the rush?
This is our ‘Last Chance to Vax’ before school begins!
In order for youth aged 12-17 to be fully vaccinated by the first day of school, they need to receive their second vaccine no later than August 24th. Full coverage against COVID-19 comes two weeks after the second dose.
Walk in, skip the line! No appointment necessary!
This Wednesday and Thursday only (July 21 and 22) a ‘Vax to School’ fast line will be available for youth and their families who walk-in. We welcome youth and families to walk-in at any Peel Public Health clinic and present themselves at the front of the line with proof of age in order to skip the line. This will make vaccination quick and easy for them, and their accompanying parents, who can also get vaccinated at the same time.
Youth aged 12-17 will be guaranteed to receive the Pfizer vaccine, which is the only product approved for use in this age group. Accompanying parents and caregivers can get an mRNA vaccine that is available at the time of the visit (both Pfizer and Moderna may be available.)

Why is this important?
The lives of youth in Peel have been turned upside down by the pandemic, and this has impacted their mental health and their education. Our goal for this September is not only for a safe return to school, but a return to school that is as close to ‘normal’ as possible for Peel students. To make this happen, with the delta variant circulating, we need to aim for 100% coverage among youth who are 12 -17 years old in Peel.
Youth in Peel who are 12-17 are eligible for first and second doses with the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. Information for parents and youth about the COVID-19 vaccine is available here: Youth Vaccine Seminar – YouTube. Youth still have a way to go to reach the same level of protection as adults in Peel. As of July 19, 70% of eligible 12-17 year olds have had their first dose and 40% are protected with two doses.
“I’m urging all eligible youth aged 12-17 to get fully protected through ‘Vax to School’! We know kids want to get back to their friends, classrooms and extra-curriculars. The quickest and safest way for them to do so is to get vaccinated at least two weeks before school starts.” said Dr. Lawrence Loh, Medical Officer of Health, Peel Region.
