Important Information from Region of Peel

Important Information about Regional Services

The Region of Peel has been in collective bargaining with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 966, which represents 500 Human Services employees, 282 Public Works employees and 80 TransHelp employees. Currently, Human Services and Public Works employees are on strike and talks with the union regarding TransHelp employees are underway. Should TransHelp employees choose to strike, they can legally do so on June 10 at 12:01 a.m.

All critical and essential services to the public will be maintained while the strike continues. The health and safety of those who live and work in Peel is of the highest importance. Residents  and clients should expect some service reductions or delays in non-critical areas.

Water and Wastewater Services

Peel’s water is safe to drink and water quality will not be compromised. Peel’s water continues to be tested, treated and monitored by certified, non-union staff.

Collection of Garbage, Organics, Recyclable Materials  and Yard Waste Regular collection with the exception of yard waste in Brampton and Mississauga continues. Yard waste pick-up in Caledon is not affected. Collection of garbage and organics is a priority. If material is not picked-up by 10 p.m. on the designated collection day, residents should make sure it is ready for collection by  7 a.m. the next day. If collection methods change, residents will be notified.

Community Recycling Centres (CRCs)

The Bolton, Brampton and Fewster Community Recycling Centres are open during regularly scheduled hours of operation. Residents dropping off items at these CRCs may experience significant delays. The Caledon and Battleford Community Recycling Centres are closed

Human Services

There will be no interruptions to Ontario Works payments, child care and housing subsidies. TransHelp (assisted transit for the mobility impaired)  Dialysis and essential medical trips will continue to be provided should a strike occur. Other trips will be accommodated on a priority basis depending on capacity.
