Habitat GTA builds homes for the first time ever in Caledon
10 families set to become Habitat homeowners and new members of the Caledon community
Habitat for Humanity GTA (Habitat GTA) will join members of the Caledon community for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 29th at their Kennedy Road build site, the organization’s first build project in Caledon to date.
The ceremony brings together special guests, including His Worship Allan Thompson, Mayor of the Town of Caledon and future Habitat homeowners who will call these houses their homes when completed. The Kennedy Road project will provide decent, affordable housing to 10 working, low-income families by the end of summer 2018, helping them leave the rental side of affordable housing and get a permanent foot into homeownership.
“With an extreme shortage of affordable housing options across the GTA, it’s important for us to start building in Caledon,” said Thomas Fischer, Vice President of Regional Development at Habitat GTA. “I have had the personal pleasure of notifying a few of the families that they will be moving in, and hearing what having a decent, affordable place to call home and raise their children means to them. It’s truly inspiring. We are fortunate to have amazing partners like the Region of Peel; The Town of Caledon, corporate and individuals from the community who support us in various ways but there is still much support needed.”
The need for affordable housing has never been greater. With 1 in 5 households living in over-crowded, substandard or unaffordable housing in the GTA, Habitat GTA has an ambitious goal of becoming a 100 home a year organization. Increasing build activity in regions such as Caledon, will allow the organization to work toward its goal to help more families move from crowded, unhealthy living conditions in to Habitat homes.
