Lalla Rook seems to have it all. A close circle of friends, a husband, a nice house and 2 children… but she wants more. It’s never enough. She wants her dream house in the “better” neighbourhood. She wants her nasty daughter in a better school. She wants her husband to make partner so she can have MORE! Lalla has a lot on her plate.
The book opens with her hosting a birthday party for her youngest child. Unfortunately, there is a dead body (stabbed by Lalla) in the other room for her to contend with. It is the body of someone she does not know and has no idea why he attacked her in her own home. Does Lalla panic? No. She puts a note on the door barring anyone from entering that room and continues with the party. Rather than calling the police, she decides to clean up the room and get rid of the body herself.
Now, with everything else on her plate, she has to solve the murder she just committed. Lalla doesn’t want the police involved for several reasons, one of which is, that she has killed before….to get what she wanted. Lalla is a sociopath who will let nothing get in the way of what she wants. She does all horrible things to people who deny her requests, in true sociopathic fashion. We also get a little background on her which gives us some insight into why she is a sociopath, without giving her any excuses. Every time something goes wrong (and it does), she is capable of changing her direction and making it all someone else’s fault. She is nothing, if not PERSISTANT. That’s what makes the book funny.
If you can get past the unlikability of the main character, you will see it is an over the top, funny, unique read with a mystery and a very “entitled” main character. Read it with a grain of salt. Lalla would.
Enjoy
