Press Release from Democracy Caledon

Mayor Commits to NO Vote During the Summer on her zoning by-law amendments

At the May 23 Community Information session, held at the Albion Bolton Community Centre, on the Caledon Mayor’s 12 proposed zoning bylaws amendments, the question was raised on the expected timing of a vote by council.

Democracy Caledon co-founder Debbe Crandall asked Mayor Annette Groves for her commitment to not force a vote during the summer months, noting that many Caledon residents will be away for the summer holidays.

In response, the Mayor made an unequivocal commitment that a vote not be held until after the summer. Democracy Caledon is calling on the mayor to honour that commitment.

Democracy Caledon is opposed to Mayor Groves’ use of the Strong Mayor Power granted her by the Doug Ford’s government, to advance the rezoning of 12 development applications to expedite 35,000 housing units in Caledon.

This advancement bypasses and circumvents proper planning including official plan requirements, which previous Council administrations have used to manage growth in a sensible, orderly manner.

It is also undemocratic. Under the Strong Mayor Power, the mayor can obtain support for the amendments with the support of just three councilors which represents just over one third of Council.

The Bolton information session was the second of four to be held with the last one being scheduled for June 10, 2024 in Caledon East. In response to Councillor Napoli’s comments that the low attendance at the first session held in Southfields indicated that “everyone supported the Mayor”, Democracy Caledon is urging all those in opposition or who have questions to attend the last community information session.
