The first concert in our 2026-2027 concert season takes place on Saturday, October 3, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. and will feature the Rebekah Wolkstein-Joe Phillips Duo. Violinist Rebekah Wolkstein and bassist/guitarist Joe Phillips bring their full musical lives to this intimate evening for two. Both members of Payadora Tango Ensemble, they share a passion for music without borders —Argentine tango, South American folkloric music, Baroque, Spanish classical, jazz, and the haunting resonance of the Norwegian Hardanger fiddle.
Joe is principal bassist of London Symphonia and an in-demand touring musician across multiple genres — a musical partnership that spans centuries and continents.
Rebekah Wolkstein – Violin
Celebrated for her stunning virtuosity, nuance and broad musical versatility, Wisconsin-born violinist, Rebekah Wolkstein has established a strong presence on the Toronto music scene. Rebekah has worked as an orchestral musician since winning an audition at the age of 16. She has performed and toured extensively with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, The National Ballet of Canada, and The Canadian Opera Company. An active studio musician, Rebekah is also at home playing in the styles of Folk, Klezmer, Pop, Latin, and Jazz and can be heard on numerous recordings including new releases by Donovan Woods, Laila Biali, Royal Wood and Justin Gray. Rebekah is the first violinist of the Venuti String Quartet. She has performed as a violin soloist with Esmerelda Enrique Spanish Dance Company, Kaeja Dance and live to air with Simon Spiro on classical 96.3 FM and with Russell Braun. Aside from her active performing career, Rebekah holds a Doctorate in Violin Performance from the University of Toronto as well as degrees in violin from the Cleveland Institute of Music. A dedicated educator, Rebekah teaches private lessons and ensembles out of her own studio and at Humber College.
Joseph Phillips – Bass, Guitar
Joe Phillips is one of Canada’s most versatile double bassists. He performs with Toronto’s genre-defying Art of Time Ensemble, reimagines folk traditions learned from field recordings with banjoist Jayme Stone’s Folklife, struts his stuff with Payadora Tango Ensemble, performs annually at Sweetwater Music Weekend with some of the best chamber musicians in the world, and plays principal bass in the London Symphonia. Equally at home in a concert hall or at a folk festival, Joe has appeared as guest principal bass with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra, has performed at the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow, the Winnipeg Folk Festival, and toured Canada with chamber music supergroup, Octagon.
He teaches double bass at Western University.
When not touring, Joe lives in London Ontario with his partner and their two children
