Bethell Hospice Foundation Welcomes Shirley Horsley to the Fundraising Team

Shirley Horsley spent over two decades in sales with a local media company, based in their Bolton location. Her father, Bill Whitbread, had worked there for many years before.  She was one of over 600 employees left in shock when the closure announcement came last September.

Initially Shirley thought of taking a few months off, but it did not quite work out that way. By October she had signed a 3-month contract to work with the fundraising team with Bethell Hospice Foundation. Although Shirley originally planned to help the Foundation through a busy season, she discovered that she loved the work so much that she accepted a permanent position in February.

Raised in Caledon and with a vast network of area contacts Shirley is already hard at work in her role as Fundraising and Community Engagement Coordinator.

In addition to the huge network, she also has had the experience of organizing both an annual golf and softball tournament. The Dawna Hunt Memorial Golf Tournament was held in memory of a longtime Zehrs Bolton employee who passed away in 2014 after a battle with cancer. Shirley was a friend of Dawna’s and was touched by her positive attitude after diagnosis and her will to fight to the end. Proceeds from the current softball tournament go directly to support Bethell Hospice Foundation.

The new Coordinator is clearly proud to join the Bethell Hospice Foundation team. “It is such a great organization with an amazing group of volunteers and staff who make it not just a building but rather a home. Whether it is the aroma from the freshly baked goodies in the kitchen, family members gathering for a hot beverage in the morning, or the pianist that provides entertainment to residents and their families, Bethell is truly a special place.”

Shirley says she is very excited to see growth in this year’s fundraising events, starting with the annual Hike for Bethell in Inglewood on Sunday May 5th.

“We live in such an amazing community where people really want to help and give back to a great cause that is close to home”, she says.
