Yesterday marked the opening of this year’s Caledon Farmers Market. I spent a bit of time yesterday roaming through the booths, talking to the folks who grew the delicious produce I was about to take home – getting to know my farmers as it were. Food is a different experience when you actually get to meet the people who nurtured it along. The freshness, nutrition and flavour are all so much better than it is when you pick it off the shelf after a truck journey of a few thousand kilometres. Yesterday we filled our bags with organic greens (mustard greens are amazing), sunflower sprouts, tomatoes, strawberries, spicy little pepperettes, fresh baked biscotti, and 2 marvellous cheeses (evanturel and asiago). I even brought home a few herbs for my garden – basil, thyme and rosemary. Every Thursday, from now until October, we’ll have the chance to support farmers and crafters from Caledon and the surrounding area by venturing over to the Caledon Farmers Market at the Bolton Fairgrounds from 3:00 to 7:00. Don’t miss out, it’s a delicious opportunity!
