Caledon East residents and businesses were very happy to see Airport Road reopened to traffic on Friday, September 4, ahead of schedule and in time for the Labour Day long weekend. While road closures undoubtedly pose an inconvenience for drivers and businesses alike, they are typically necessary to accomplish the renewal or replacement of critical infrastructure and the addition of new design elements.

During the Airport Road closure, construction activities included:

  • Installation of new storm sewer infrastructure.
  • Preparation for bridge rehabilitation.
  • Relocation of water services where conflicts were encountered.
  • Investigation, location, and protection of underground utilities.
  • Installation of poles, streetlights, and wiring to support a temporary pedestrian crossing.
  • Backfilling and asphalt restoration of affected areas.
  • Site cleanup and roadway sweeping.

While the project work continues, two lanes will be open in each direction on Airport Road, and a pedestrian bridge has been installed over the Centreville Creek to maintain pedestrian access for residents and businesses. This increases accessibility to the area, as the original design had planned for only one lane of Airport Road to be open over the bridge, with no pedestrian traffic.
