Peel Mutual Insurance Company receives 2013 Fire Safety Award
On June 12, 2013, Peel Mutual Insurance Company received a Fire Safety Award from the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council at a ceremony in Toronto. The award stems from a nomination made by Caledon Fire and Emergency Services.
In July 2012, Caledon Fire and Emergency Services made the decision to invest in a Fire and Life Safety House (FLSH) in hopes to enhance public education in the community. In order to raise funds for the project, the Cheltenham Firefighters approached Peel Mutual Insurance Company with a presentation to the Board. Peel Mutual Insurance Company agreed to generously donate $27,000 – the balance of the funds required – and pledged to continually support the needs and upkeep of the FLSH.
Since the FLSH has been in service, Caledon Fire and Emergency Services has attended eight community events, reaching a range of age groups from local and surrounding families. Letters have been issued to Caledon schools offering educational tours of the FLSH for students with aims to incorporate an annual visit of the FLSH into the curriculum. Caregivers young and old will be equally encouraged to learn how to stay fire safe and Caledon Fire anticipates the FLSH will be featured at about half of the 60 community events, reaching 3000 children and adults.
The partnership between Caledon Fire and Emergency Services and Peel Mutual Insurance Company will enable Caledon Fire to enhance department goals to continue their outreach public education programs within the school system and the community at large. The FLSH will provide an educational tool that will be an integral component in community service delivery. The partnership benefits will also impact the insurance industry and Peel Mutual policy holders in the prevention of incidents that threaten life and property.
Each year, the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council’s Fire Safety Awards recognize innovative partnerships and outstanding contributions that enhance fire prevention and public education in communities across Ontario. Recipients are chosen by a selection committee based on nominations received from Ontario fire departments.
